"A new way to roll," says Kia.
Kia has entered the”cube segment”? with the introduction of it’s all-new halo car, the 2010 Soul, which this Korean automaker describes as “a new way to roll.” ? The styling is fresh, the equipment is versatile and the value is competitive. The Soul is larger in dimensions than a Honda Fit 5-door or Scion xD, but smaller in size than the Honda Element or Scion xB.
There are four trim levels from which to choose, designated Base 1.6L, Soul + 2.0L, Soul ! 2.0L and Soul sport 2.0L. Clearly, Kia is departing from conventional alphanumeric model names by using plus signs and exclamation points; the automaker hopes its target demographic will relate to these hip symbols.
Viewing the outside of the Soul, you’ll see a spunky-looking vehicle defined by an attractive sloping window line and a long wheelbase. Within the fenders, wheel sizes range from 15 to 18 inches, which make for a very dynamic stance on the larger end. Body-colored panels are applied throughout, while a chrome accented grill provides some distinction up front. Sport models get a rear lift gate spoiler and unique side sills, as well as the option of a power sunroof.
The cabin space is all about passenger accommodation and technology integration. An upscale audio system sends 315 watts of power through 8 speakers, with a subwoofer. Both USB and auxiliary input jacks are included in all models, allowing the quick integration of an iPod or other mobile music device. Storage is also a top priority, with a dual compartment glovebox up front and a nifty cargo management solution in the rear floor.
Base 1.6L models get a 122 horsepower four cylinder engine, pairing exclusively with a five speed manual transmission. The three 2.0L models get a 142 horse motor, as well as the option of a four speed automatic gearbox. All engine and transmission configurations return highway fuel economy of at least 30 miles per gallon.
Along with plentiful technology and versatile powertrains, Kia integrates top tier safety systems as standard. Full length curtain airbags, active front head restraints, four wheel disc brakes and electronic stability control are included in all models. The Soul is a car for people who want fun and flexibility, while preserving the integrity of both their passengers and their wallets.
The Soul’s price tag of $13,995 is still under the $14K mark. And with all boxes checked on the highest trim level Soul sport, the vehicle will still come in below $20,000. With gasoline prices headed up, we just might be looking at the future.
