Majority of Drivers Text, Read Emails While Driving

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

CarGurus.com survey finds more than half of respondents (52%) said they have used a cell phone to read/write email or text while driving in the last 12 months.

According to a July 2009 Virginia Tech Transportation Institute study, truck drivers face a 23 times greater risk of a crash or near crash while texting than when not doing so. Given the known risks of texting and reading email while driving, it seems surprising that a majority of consumers appear to be doing exactly that.

Just last month, the Senate proposed a bill (the ALERT ACT), which would ban truck and car drivers from texting or emailing while driving. Fourteen states already have laws barring texting while driving.

“Most consumers would agree that texting and emailing while you drive is dangerous. I was surprised to see that the majority of respondents admitted to distracting themselves from driving,” remarked Langley Steinert, CEO of CarGurus.com “Clearly this is not a small problem, but rather a widespread trend.”

GM, Penske in Deal for Saturn

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Saturn Blimp UnveiledDetroit — General Motors Corp. and Penske Automotive Group confirmed details of a proposed transaction under which Penske would acquire the Saturn brand.

If completed, the deal would save 13,000 jobs at Saturn and it would preserve the customer-focused Saturn brand.

The proposed transaction is part of GM’s rebuilding efforts outlined in the viability plan that was submitted to the U.S. government earlier this year and is now a part of GM reorganization plan submitted to bankruptcy court.

Under the terms in the memorandum of understanding, Penske would obtain the rights to the brand as well as certain other Saturn assets. GM would continue production, on a contract basis, of the Saturn Aura, Vue and Outlook.

The bottom line is that Penske gets a practically all new Saturn product line that is supported by loyal customers and 350 of GM’s best dealers. More than four million Saturns have been sold since 1990.

The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of this year and is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. Financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed. But bet the farm that Penske will pay nowhere near the estimated $5 billion that it cost GM to create Saturn.

Kia Soul Might be the Future

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009
"A new way to roll," says Kia.

"A new way to roll," says Kia.

Kia has entered the”cube segment”? with the introduction of it’s all-new halo car, the 2010 Soul, which this Korean automaker describes as “a new way to roll.” ? The styling is fresh, the equipment is versatile and the value is competitive. The Soul is larger in dimensions than a Honda Fit 5-door or Scion xD, but smaller in size than the Honda Element or Scion xB.

There are four trim levels from which to choose, designated Base 1.6L, Soul + 2.0L, Soul ! 2.0L and Soul sport 2.0L. Clearly, Kia is departing from conventional alphanumeric model names by using plus signs and exclamation points; the automaker hopes its target demographic will relate to these hip symbols.

Viewing the outside of the Soul, you’ll see a spunky-looking vehicle defined by an attractive sloping window line and a long wheelbase. Within the fenders, wheel sizes range from 15 to 18 inches, which make for a very dynamic stance on the larger end. Body-colored panels are applied throughout, while a chrome accented grill provides some distinction up front. Sport models get a rear lift gate spoiler and unique side sills, as well as the option of a power sunroof.

The cabin space is all about passenger accommodation and technology integration. An upscale audio system sends 315 watts of power through 8 speakers, with a subwoofer. Both USB and auxiliary input jacks are included in all models, allowing the quick integration of an iPod or other mobile music device. Storage is also a top priority, with a dual compartment glovebox up front and a nifty cargo management solution in the rear floor.

Base 1.6L models get a 122 horsepower four cylinder engine, pairing exclusively with a five speed manual transmission. The three 2.0L models get a 142 horse motor, as well as the option of a four speed automatic gearbox. All engine and transmission configurations return highway fuel economy of at least 30 miles per gallon.

Along with plentiful technology and versatile powertrains, Kia integrates top tier safety systems as standard. Full length curtain airbags, active front head restraints, four wheel disc brakes and electronic stability control are included in all models. The Soul is a car for people who want fun and flexibility, while preserving the integrity of both their passengers and their wallets.

The Soul’s price tag of $13,995 is still under the $14K mark. And with all boxes checked on the highest trim level Soul sport, the vehicle will still come in below $20,000. With gasoline prices headed up, we just might be looking at the future.

Ford Fusion — It’s About the Future of Ford

Friday, March 6th, 2009

The economy is so deep in the tank that it’s all about positioning and it seems to me that’s what Ford is doing with the Ford Fusion and its hybrid sibling.

The new 2010 Ford Fusion and Fusion Hybrid launch this month with a multi-faceted marketing campaign emphasizing Ford’s intent to expand its share of the car market.

Consumers consider Ford as a truck company with the Explorer and the long time F150 pickup. Add in the Mustang, and since Ford killed the Taurus, those vehicles are pretty much what the company is known for.

But Ford plans to change that with an aggressive launch of the Ford Fusion and its hybrid sibling. Ford is positioning itself to have the right products when the price of gasoline increases and the price will rise.

The gasoline powered 2010 Fusion gets 23 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway; while the hybrid version gets 41 mpg and 36 mpg respectively.

With its “We Speak Car” marketing program Ford will leverage the country’s new found frugality in the face of a slumping economy. The base price of the gasoline powered Fusion is 19,995; while the hybrid version starts at $27,995. But buyers get a federal tax credit of $3,400.

Ford plans to change its entire car lineup in the next 18 months with redesigned or small gas sipping European models new to this market. Ford is showing a lot of vigor which is remarkable for a company thought dead just last year.
